Sushi on Stanley, Darlinghurst, Sydney

Cuisine: Japanese

I worked in Darlinghurst for 3 months and I visited Sushi on Stanley at least once a week. The food was excellent – tasty, very fresh and cheap. The restaurant was very small and best suited for a quick, informal meal or takeaway – the place gets full very quickly. There were a couple of outdoor tables but as there are no parasols, it could get rather hot in the Australian Summer. I often sat on one of the tables nearest the entrance and watched the world go by.

The menu includes a great selection of sushi, sashimi, hand rolls and hot dishes such as udon, teriyaki and katsu. They also have changing specials such as Balmain Bug tempura and oyster katsu. One of my favourites was the prawn won ton soup udon – absolutely delicious and a generous portion of plump won ton dumplings (no pork, just prawn 🙂 ) and sprinkling of seaweed. I also loved the small sushi set – six nigiri, one large maki and four small maki. This and a pot of green tea made a perfect lunch on a hot Sydney summer’s day.

I could not get over how cheap the food was, especially for such fresh produce – at the time of writing, $5 for a generous portion of very fresh salmon and avocado futomaki (big) rolls! The set meals are great too – for example, fish teriyaki, rice, salad, sushi rolls and miso soup for the princely sum of around $12. I had this on a number of occasions. I also tried the tempura and California roll set meal. Sydney is not a cheap place but I can say that you would really struggle to find anything similar for this price in the UK (where I’m from). You can buy a tiny portion of pre-packaged sushi from the supermarket for the equivalent of $5 in the UK, but it will not be freshly made or the portion anywhere near as big.

I have many happy memories of my time in Sydney and Sushi on Stanley is one of them. Folks of Darlinghurst, you are very lucky 🙂
