Maya Masala is now called Maya Vegetarian
I am always on the look out for good vegetarian food and I found a great Indian restaurant in between Bourke Street and Crown Street in Surry Hills. There are quite a few Indian restaurants on Cleveland Street (I went to a few) and Maya Masala stood out for me. It wasn’t just the sweets or the TV screen showing Bollywood movies!
Maya Masala is an informal dine in place that serves tasty and authentic vegetarian and vegan food from North and South India. In terms of service, you order at the counter and the food is brought over to you.
The menu is big and includes a mixture of main meals and street food – it is difficult to choose what to have! We had a South Indian thali which included 4 curries, rice, bread, poppadom and lassi. We also ordered a biryani and a dosa – all were delicious and the spicing was perfect for us. The portion sizes were very generous and the prices were cheap. The two of us ordered way too much food and ended up taking half of it home.
For any carnivores, please don’t be put off by the vegetarian menu – I went with a meat eater and the verdict was the food was simply delicious. The fact that there was no meat on the menu did not matter.
I have to mention the large counter of assorted Indian sweets and desserts. These looked very tempting but alas we were too full to think of more food!
Maya Masala is not the place to go if you like only ‘western style’ curries – there were a large number of Indian customers eating in and also ordering sweets. However, if you like well cooked and authentic Indian food, then give it a go. Ah, lucky people of Surry Hills – I so wish there was somewhere like Maya Masala near where I live in the UK!
