Type of shop: Social enterprise speciality coffee shop
Canvas Coffee Shop is a pop up shop within Portsmouth & Southsea train station, that serves their own blend of speciality coffee, roasted in Hampshire. They also sell local tea from All About Tea, a selection of home made cakes, pastries and local ice cream. In addition, Canvas is a social enterprise with all profits going towards social initiatives.
The coffee is excellent (I usually have a flat white, long black or a mocha) and costs about £2.50 a cup a time of writing. To put this into perspective, the coffee served on the train is instant and costs £2 😀 They are also one of the few coffee shops in Portsmouth that sells long blacks, a coffee I loved in Australia and definitely not an Americano coffee…!
Commercial Road is not the nicest place in Portsmouth and the the train station is not the most vibrant. So how nice to have a charming little coffee shop with plants growing from milk cartons and free packets of coffee grounds to takeaway for composting! There is limited seating and the majority of customers are probably people catching a train. They also provide a thought for the day on a chalkboard outside the shop.
If you are travelling, commuting or in the area and fancy a hot drink and snack, you could do a lot worse than to pop in to this little place – you would be supporting a worthwhile enterprise too. I wish them well and look forward to seeing more pop up coffee shops.
UPDATE 7th September 2016: There is now a small pop up shop at Portsmouth Harbour train station, open Monday to Friday, 06.30 to 12.00 midday.
UPDATE 28th April 2015: The shop has moved to the other side of Portsmouth & Southsea train station to a bigger shop. They no longer sell local ice cream but do sell pastries and sandwiches from the Southsea based artisan bakery, BREAD Addiction.
