Type of food: Bagels
Within a half mile radius of the Barbican, there are a number of chain food shops – Pret A Manger, Eat and Subway – all offering lunch options for the many people who work in and visit the area. I have been to both Pret and Eat many times and I can understand their ubiquity (mainly) in London. However, I do like supporting independent places and a work colleague recommended Beigels to me. She came back with huge and delicious looking bagel so I had to try the place.
Beigels is a little shop on Goswell Road, opposite the Italia Conti Theatre Academy, that sells bagels. There are plenty to choose from, including breakfast bagels, cheesy melts, typical sandwich fillings and toasted bagels with peanut butter. Of course there are the specials too such as pastrami and hot salt beef. There are even burger bagels.
I often go for the halloumi salad with added chilli sauce which is delicious and a great vegetarian option – a bargain at £3 at the time of writing. I’ve also tried and enjoyed the Lox Special – smoked salmon, cream cheese, tomato and red onion – and the tuna cheese melt. The bagels are fresh, doughy and big – as they should be! However, I wasn’t that keen on the cheese omelette breakfast bagel – this was too stodgy, even for me.
There’s also a nice selection of cakes and pastries, including Portuguese custard tarts, and coffee.
There is very limited seating – one table I think inside and a couple outside – so Beigels is best suited for a quick bite to eat in or to takeaway. If you happen to be in the area – the Barbican and the Museum of London are near by – and you fancied a quick bite to eat for breakfast or lunch, then you could do a lot worse than pop into Beigels. Unless you don’t like bagels of course!
