Sydney’s Thai Town is located in Haymarket in the CBD, near Chinatown. The main stretch of Thai Town is on Campbell Street, bordering Pitt Street, Goulburn Street and George Street. Here, you will find a wonderful array of Thai restaurants serving authentic food and grocery shops.
Thanon Khao San is a lively little restaurant in Pitt Street. We loved the vibrant atmosphere in the restaurant. It was busy and some of the tables were a bit cramped, which meant the feeling was more street food cafe rather than formal restaurant. The decor was great too – bare brick walls, bird cage like lampshades and a tuk-tuk – our table was next to the tuk-tuk and I did very well to not sit in it!
The menu is comprehensive, with a good selection of traditional street food, stir fried dishes, curries, salads and noodles. We really enjoyed the food. We had tom yum soups to start followed by a fishy feast for the main course – a seafood platter and some steamed rice. The seafood platter included a deep fried whole fish served in a sweet chilli sauce, soft shell crab, squid, New Zealand mussels and king prawns. We enjoyed the soups in particular, the spicing was just right for our taste.
For dessert, we chose a couple of the Thai sweets on display. At the restaurant’s entrance, there was a small hawker cart, laden with colourful traditional Thai sweets – it would have been rude not to try one…!
The cart was very popular with many passing customers ordering sweets to take away. In general, East Asian desserts can be an acquired taste and some may find the textures a bit strange. However, if you like coconut and don’t mind sticky rice, then it’s worth giving one a go – I admit that the green pandan jellies may look a little scary at first 😉
All in all, we had relaxed evening at a fun little place with some nice food.
