Type of food: Falafel
We Love Falafel (or to be precise, We ♥ Falafel) is one of my favourite places to go to for a delicious quick bite to eat in Brighton. As the name suggests, falafel, that wonderful Middle Eastern chickpea delight takes centre stage. There are usually 4 flavours on offer: original, sweet potato, beetroot and the daily special. The daily special has ranged from curry, Chinese five spice, Christmas nut roast and paprika – an eclectic mix! You can have your falafel served in one of five ways: a salad wrap, a salad wrap with halloumi, a cheese melt wrap, a salad box or a mixed falafel box. Each of these options have various accompaniments such as homemade houmous, a selection of salads and yogurt sauce. The specials tend to be accompanied with different sauces depending on the flavour – for example the Christmas special came with a cranberry sauce. There are also a couple of falafel free options – halloumi salad wrap and houmous and salad.
The falafels at We Love Falafel are made on the premises each day and, in my humble opinion, are probably the best falafel I have ever eaten. The seasoning and flavouring is perfect – according to the website, ‘a high fresh herb to chickpea ratio’ is the key and the recipe was perfected after ‘months of experimentation.’ I have tried a few of the flavours from the classic original to the beetroot version to some of the specials and they have all been very tasty.
I always go for a falafel, halloumi and salad wrap. I first discovered halloumi as a student at a kebab shop – one of the few veggie options was halloumi and chilli kebab and I have been a fan ever since. While we’re on the subject, a halloumi and salad bagel is also a fine thing, something I discovered at Beigels near the Barbican in London. Anyway, at We Love Falafel, the wrap will usually include three falafels, grilled halloumi, houmous, salad, gherkins, chilli sauce and yogurt sauce. This is indeed as delicious as it sounds 🙂 The cost of this deliciousness is £4.25 or £4.50 for the daily special fafalel (at time of writing). The salad wrap (with no hallomi) will set you back £3.70 or £3.95 for the daily special.
We Love Falafel is vegetarian and also a fantastic choice for vegans – there is a vegan version of the yogurt sauce available and grilled tofu is available as an extra. Falafel and houmous is a perfect combination that happens to be vegan and loved by many of my meat eating friends. The falafels are gluten free so the salad box and falafel box are great gluten free options. There is a small eat-in area and a few outside tables so We Love Falafel is very popular for takeaway. The food is made to order so there will be a queue at busy times.
We Love Falafel is open Monday – Saturday from 11am – 6pm and is on Sydney Street in the North Laine – it’s the ideal place to go for something cheap, healthy and very tasty to eat.
